756Sports first Bay Area Athlete of the Week honors is going to St. Mary’s Senior guard, Mickey (i got the most fucking irish name ever) McConnell. In February, the 6’0 guard from Mesa, Arizona is averaging 21.5 PPG while leading the Gaels to a 4-0 record in WCC play. This past week, McConnell scored 25 points against Santa Clara including three buckets from downtown and chipped in with 19 points and 8 assists to beat second-place USF. The guard has shown his ability to dribble-drive and dish throughout the season and is averaging 6.2 assists to go along with his 16.2 points. He has four double-doubles on the season and has continued to develop down the stretch. McConnell not only has led the Gaels with his scoring, but this month he has not missed a minute of play, averaging 40 minutes per contest. The undersized guard uses his high basketball IQ in combination with his handles and range to lead St. Mary’s. Congratulations to Mickey McConnell for his great month of February and an overall great senior season.

Here is a clip of his amazing, game-winning buzzer beater from January 27 at Gonzaga to beat the Zags, 73-71.
