Riordan 63 Seaside 39:
After getting thorough beaten up this year in West Catholic Athletic League play, Archbishop Riordan High School showed why the WCAL is stacked in men’s basketball this year. Riordan’s basketball team opened their second round CCS play against Seaside with runs of 10-0 and 15-1. They went on to win by 24 points in their 63-39 second-round Central Coast Section Division III home win.
Aaron Anderson had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Crusaders (9-17) who will try to avenge earlier loses to San Francisco rival St. Ignatius.
The two teams will battle in quarterfinal play 3:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius.
Anthony Castillo added 14 points and seven rebounds and Sophomore Graham Gilleran contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Seaside finished 19-9 on the season.
Mills 59, Saratoga 43:
Arakel Aristakessian had 15 points and Phil Rognerud had 12 as Mills pulled off a big upset. Earlier in the year, Saratoga pulled off a 50-30 win over Mills in the finals of the Prospect Tournament and Mills was having none of that in this CCS rematch.
Mills (17-9) now plays third-seed Burlingame 1:45 p.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius in quarterfinal play.
Watsonville 64, Gunn 61:
If you don’t know Ivo Basor, a 6-7 junior, you might want to start looking him up. Basor went beastmode on Gunn as he scored 36 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, had three steals and was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. His effort did just enough to lead Watsonville (22-5) to the win over Gunn-Palo Alto (15-10). Watsonville (22-5) now plays at No. 1 seeded Piedmont Hills on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
