The Santa Clara University Men’s Basketball team pulled together 5 wins to end its’ season on a high note. For the first time in a long period, two Bay Area basketball teams were playing in postseason college hoops. USF joined the Broncos in the College Insider Tournament and were eventually outed by SCU in a 95-91 quarterfinal thriller. SCU beat Northern Arizona, Air Force, USF, SMU, and Iona to win the CIT championship. It is definitely a step in the right direction for the Broncos who will be graduating only 4 seniors in June. The Broncos ended the season with a 24-14 record (8-6 in WCC play). Their offense centered around the perimeter play of Kevin Foster and for most of the season, they lived and died by the three. In the CIT, Coach Keating’s team was able to show a good balance and pull together as a team. Different players stepped up on different occasions leading to a trophy. Troy Payne (18 pts in 1st round), Evan Roquemore (30 pts v. USF), Michael Santos (career highs 10 pts, 8 Rebs in championship v. Iona), Ben Dowdell (14 pts, 8 Rebs in championship v. Iona) all had standout games in the tourney that led the Broncos to the championship, while redshirt junior shooting guard Kevin Foster won tournament MVP (36, 27, 35 pt games). This is a great sign for the future of the program and 756sports hopes they can make the leap to the big dance in the upcoming years. Congratulations to Santa Clara on their first ever postseason, non-conference tourney championship.
