Champions League Update

The UEFA Champions League had four matches this week as the second legs of the quarterfinals were played. Away goals, extra time and penalty kicks were not needed as the second legs were all won by the first leg winners. Manchester United, Schalke 04, Barcelona and Real Madrid all secured spots in the semifinals with clinching victories.

Man United 3-1 (aggregate) Chelsea…After Wayne Rooney secured a 1-0 away goal victory in the first leg, Man United secured a spot in the semifinals with a 2-1 win at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were led by goals from Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Ji-Sung Park. Chelsea were put down to 10 men after a red card, but managed to even the match at 1-1 through a Didier Drogba strike. The loss ensures a trophy-less season for the Blues.

Schalke 04 7-3 (aggregate) Inter...Despite poor form in the Bundesliga, Schalke has made Germany proud with its unbelievable run through the UEFA Champions League. They are definitely a Cinderella story and proved themselves in their two victories against reigning champion, Inter Milan. Schalke 04 thrashed Inter in the first leg 5-2 and held on for a 2-1 victory in Germany. All Inter can take away is the amazing goal from Dejan Stankovic that opened the scoring of this quarterfinal matchup.

Real Madrid 5-0 (aggregate) Tottenham…The dream run is over for the Tottenham Hotspurs as they ran into a hungry Real Madrid team. Real put a beatdown on Tottenham in Madrid in the first leg with a 4-0 victory. The second leg proved to be a hard fought game, but a Cristiano Ronaldo goal gave Madrid the 1-0 victory with a little help from Tottenham goalkeeper, Gomes. Former Arsenal striker, Emmanuel Adebayor led the way in the first leg with a brace. Tottenham should hold their heads high after a great run to the quarterfinals and now they can focus on securing a spot in next year’s Champions League by finishing in the top 4 in the English Premier League.

Leg 1:

FC Barcelona 6-1 (aggregate) Shakhtar…Barcelona eased past Shakhtar with its’ array of skills and beautiful footy. They won the first leg 5-1 and followed it up with a 1-0 victory led by Lionel Messi’s goal.

Leg 1:

In the next round of play, Man U takes on Schalke 04 and the two Spanish rivals square off in the other semifinal in what will prove to be two amazing games between football powerhouses.
