Mavs – Blazers Preview

Watching these highlights never get old. It still hurts me everyday that we broke up We Believe to get this guy.

I can go on and on about the Warriors mishaps, but this is not a Warriors article. However, Warriors fans know more than anyone that Dallas is vulnerable. Even though the Mavericks might think they are tougher now with Tyson Chandler, hoop heads know they are the same, soft Mavs that win 50 games every year but shit their pants in the postseason. Check out what Matt Barnes had to say on twitter about the Mavs after the scuffle they had a couple weeks ago.

Me & the Golden St homies laid out the blueprint on how to beat Dallas.. “PUNK’EM” Aint $h!t changed homey.. So enough w/the small talk

I wouldn’t mess with Matt Barnes. This is the same guy who slapped his own coach during the pro-am last summer. But, he has a point and I agree with him 100 percent.

Dirk Nowitzki gets a lot of flak, but he is an absolute beast. Even though the Warriors punked him in 07, Dirk usually plays great in the playoffs. I feel bad for the guy because he is a legit superstar in the league but he has no help. Their 2nd best clutch scorer on the team is Jason Terry, a sixth man. Dirk can’t do it by himself, he needs another superstar.

J Kidd, Shawn Marion, Peja, and Jason Terry are all guys the Blazers should have been scared of in 2000. These days, they are all good role players and nothing more. Although Tyson Chandler has had a great season and brought toughness to their team, he is not going to be enough to beat the Blazers in this series.

The Portland Trailblazers are the most intriguing team in the West. They are much better than the 6th seed and have the pieces to make a deep run. Marcus Camby and Andre Miller are savvy veterans who will provide much needed playoff experience to their young guns. Wesley Matthews has come out of nowhere to become a legit starting SG in the league. Brandon Roy lost a lot of explosiveness and has been downgraded to a bench player, but he is still effective. It’s been great to see Matthews and Nicolas Batum’s great play this season, as it has softened the blow of Roy’s downfall. And then there’s LaMarcus Aldridge, who is one of the best young stars in the NBA. He has really made a name for himself this season and is my pick for Most Improved Player after Kevin Love.

Gerald Wallace will be the key to this series. He will be matched up against Dirk and has the same job that Captain Jack had in 07, which is to intimidate Dirk and get in his grill. After struggling in his first few games as a Blazer, he has become comfortable and has given them an edge with his great open court abilities.

Prediction: Blazers in 7
This is going to be the best 1st round series in the Western Conference. Both teams play great defense, but Dallas plays at a higher pace. The key to winning the series is how Portland controls the pace and if they can get some easy fastbreak points with Gerald Wallace and their other young guns. Dirk’s going to have a tough series against Gerald with no other big scorers to help him, and that will be their downfall. Portland’s deeper and have more options than Dallas does on offense. If Dirk does not play great, (which I believe) the Blazers are going to take this series.

P.S: What I am most looking forward to most in the series is the Andre Miller-Jason Kidd matchup, two of the slowest, unathelitc, and un-orthodox players in the league. Also shout out to Armon Johnson, #1 on the Blazers, who I played with in high school on the Bay Area Warriors. He was the best player I’ve ever seen play high school ball and I can’t wait to see what he accomplishes in the NBA.
